The Ecuadorian government has removed its protection from the Yusani National Park, a glorious park deep in the Amazon rainforests of Ecuador. This park is pristine jungle, complete with painted, naked jungle people who fighting hard to maintain their land. The eastern edge of the park is now open to oil exploitation and all the accompanying destruction that involves. The saddest part is that the park hasn’t even been fully explored, there are plants and animals and insects there that may be destroyed before they are even discovered.
Ecuador is a poor country, with most families earning less than $200 a month. The government is trying to increase education and health care and install decent roads with regular public transportation. When the people are suffering all around, its easy to decide to sacrifice a bit of rainforest in an attempt to improve their lives.
